Ranks are overall positions by Pulse Score. Click a column to sort by what matters to you. Methodology.
Two ways to get an agent into your editor
AI-native editors are full applications, most of them built on the VS Code codebase, designed around the agent: chat, multi-file edits, background tasks and review tools are first-class. Extensions add an agent to the editor you already use, usually VS Code or a JetBrains IDE, and keep your existing setup.
What to compare
- Installs and ratings. For extensions, marketplace installs and star ratings are public and shown here. Standalone editors do not publish installs, so we show site traffic rank instead.
- Pricing. Most charge a monthly subscription with a quota of premium-model requests; check what happens when you run out.
- Model choice. Some let you pick among several model vendors, some route automatically, some accept your own key.
- Reliability. Where a vendor runs a public status page, we count its reported incidents.

Questions about AI IDEs and editor agents
Which AI coding extension has the most installs?
GitHub Copilot, with 78.6M installs across the marketplaces we track, followed by Tabnine (9.6M). Install counts are cumulative, so older extensions have a head start.
Do I need to switch editors to use a coding agent?
No. Agent extensions exist for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, and terminal agents work alongside any editor. AI-native editors are worth a look if you want the agent to drive more of the workflow.
