How we count

Every week we search GitHub's public code for agent config files — .mcp.json, .cursor/mcp.json, .vscode/mcp.json, CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, Cursor rules, Copilot instructions, GEMINI.md and others — and read the repos we find: their file list and their MCP configs. Forks and archived repos are left out. A server counts once per repo however many files mention it; servers configured under different names or install methods (npx, Docker, a hosted URL) are merged where we can tell they are the same.

GitHub search returns a limited number of results per query, so this is a large sample rather than every repo, and it only sees public code on the default branch. Private company repos are not in it. Use the shares to compare tools with each other, not as market share.
