It exists because the market moves faster than reviews can follow: products launch, change price, get acquired and fall out of use within months, and the quickest way to see what is happening is to watch the numbers.

How the rankings are produced
Rankings are computed by a published formula from public data and are regenerated every day. Nobody edits positions by hand. The methodology explains the formula and its limits, and the data sources page lists where every number comes from.
