An Agent Skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file: instructions, and sometimes scripts, that teach an agent one job, such as building a slide deck, reviewing code your way or writing in your brand voice. The agent sees only each skill's name and description until a task needs it, so you can install many without filling the context. npx skills is the open-source skills CLI; it asks which agents to install for. Skills can include scripts that your agent will run: read a skill before installing it, as you would any code.

Agent Skills FAQ
What is the difference between a skill and an MCP server?
An MCP server gives the agent new tools and data, such as a database or GitHub. A skill gives it know-how: instructions, templates and small scripts for doing a task well. They work together: a skill can tell the agent how to use an MCP server.
Do skills use a lot of tokens?
Little until used. At startup the agent loads only each skill's name and description; the full instructions load when a task matches. That is why moving rarely used instructions from CLAUDE.md into skills reduces token usage.
Are skills safe to install?
Treat them like any code you download: a skill can include scripts the agent will run with your permissions. Prefer packs from known authors, read the SKILL.md and scripts, and keep your agent's permission prompts on.
