What an Excel agent can do
There are two ways agents work with spreadsheets. Inside Excel, an add-in edits the workbook you have open, so formulas and formatting stay in your file. Outside Excel, a general agent takes your files or a prompt, works in its own environment and returns a finished .xlsx. The first suits ongoing models you maintain; the second suits one-off reports and data you need assembled.
What each agent does for this task
Only agents whose own documentation describes this use are listed. Checked Oct 6, 2026.
| Agent | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Cowork | Reads, edits and creates Excel files (.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm) and builds spreadsheets with variances flagged | docs |
| ChatGPT Work | Creates and edits spreadsheets, and updates open Excel workbooks through the ChatGPT for Excel add-in | docs |
| Genspark | AI Sheets generates formulas and charts and imports and exports .xlsx files | docs |
| Perplexity Computer | Works inside Excel to update spreadsheets such as comps, models and DCFs, pulling in web data | docs |
| Gemini Spark | Extracts details from sources and logs or organises them in Google Sheets | docs |
Before you trust the numbers
- Check formulas, not just values. Ask the agent to keep calculations as formulas so you can audit them.
- Keep a copy. Let the agent work on a duplicate until you know where it is reliable.
- Mind your data. Uploading a workbook sends its contents to the vendor; check its data policy for confidential files.
