Case study RV Tech (Rivian and Volkswagen Group joint venture)

How RV Tech sped up vehicle software test generation with Devin

The Rivian–Volkswagen joint venture uses Devin to generate software-in-the-loop tests from requirements and to pre-triage vehicle access tickets. As reported by Cognition, test output rose sharply.

The problem

Tracing requirements to tests took long meetings between systems and software engineers. Triaging vehicle access tickets by hand took up several engineers during busy periods.

How they did it

  1. Gave Devin the simulation framework, codebase architecture and requirements for SIL testing.
  2. Devin generated test cases, opened merge requests and iterated until tests passed before review.
  3. Set up a Devin Slackbot that pulls VINs and timestamps from tickets, fetches logs and runs parsing scripts.
  4. Engineers review Devin's first-pass triage.

Results

  • As reported by Cognition: a '10-15x increase in test generation velocity'.
  • 'Devin writes approximately 100% of the test code in most cases.'
  • '3-4 engineers redirected from customer support back to product.'

As reported by the source (Cognition (Devin) customer story); AgentGid did not measure these figures.

Takeaway. If you have written requirements and a simulation harness, let the agent iterate until tests pass, and keep engineers on review.
AgentGid's take

This suits engineering teams that already have written requirements, a working simulation harness and the people to review merge requests; without those, the setup has little to build on. Note that the 10-15x and roughly 100% figures are vendor-reported by Cognition, and Devin's usage beyond the $20/mo Pro plan is billed at API pricing. For a cheaper trial of cloud agents, Jules has a Free + $19.99/mo option.
