Mod almost any PC game with Claude Code and the universal-modder plugin
An open-source GitHub project packages skills, a command-line tool, a shared knowledge base and the fal MCP server so AI coding agents such as Claude Code can mod PC games the user owns. Example mods include a Terraria weapon pack, an Age of Empires II civilization and a Minecraft-inside-GTA V passthrough.
The problem
Modding a game normally means working out its engine, reading or reverse-engineering its code, producing matching art and audio, and testing in the live game. Each of these steps is slow, and lessons learned about a given game tend to be lost between attempts.
How they did it
- Install the plugin for your agent, for example in Claude Code via the plugin marketplace commands, or use the skills-only install for other agents.
- Install the um CLI with uv or pipx, and make sure Git, Python 3.10+ and ffmpeg are available (Blender for 3D-to-sprite renders).
- Store a fal API key with um fal key set so the MCP server and um fal can generate art, 3D and audio.
- Give the agent a modding goal; it follows the mod-any-game loop: search the knowledge base, recon the game, set up a safe lab with backed-up saves, read the code, build one working slice, generate assets, and verify in the real game.
- Record and package the mod, then write a field note and optionally open a pull request so the next agent can reuse the lessons.
From the official docs
um kb search "grand theft auto"
um kb new --game "Hades II" --title "A new boon god" --from-scan hades --agent "Codex (gpt-6)"
um kb check knowledge/games/hades-ii/a-new-boon-god.md
Results
- The repository ships three worked examples: a Terraria tModLoader weapon and boss pack with sprites made through fal, an Age of Empires II DE civilization with a Robotaxi unique unit, and Minecraft running inside GTA V story mode.
- As reported by the project README, the repository has 8.1k stars and 882 forks.
- Community field notes cover ports such as Minecraft inside Portal 2 and Halo 3 content in Minecraft.
As reported by the source (GitHub repository README (rehan-remade/universal-modder)); AgentGid did not measure these figures.
This suits a solo hobbyist or small team who is comfortable with Python tooling and game internals, since the setup needs Git, Python 3.10+, ffmpeg and a fal API key. Expect two recurring costs: Claude Code starts at $20/mo, and fal generation is billed on top. The 8.1k stars are README-reported, not a measure of ease. To spend less, try the skills-only install with OpenCode (Free + $10/mo).
