10 Free Open-Source Alternatives to Big Tech Tools, Checked

A viral post lists 10 GitHub repos that replace paid tools, from yt-dlp and Ollama to n8n and Bitwarden. We read every license and project page: four come with conditions the post skips, and here is what AgentGid's data says about the AI ones.

On October 17, 2026 @He1s_Sammy posted "10 GitHub repos that Big Tech doesn't want you to know about": free, open-source replacements for YouTube downloaders, AI APIs, Midjourney, paid transcription, Google Analytics, Notion, Figma, Zapier, Calendly and password managers.

Every repo on the list is real and popular. We checked each license and project page, and four of the ten have conditions the post does not mention: one breaks the terms of the site it is mainly used on, one is in bug-fix-only mode, and two are not the open-source products the post describes.

The fine print

Repo What the post says What we found
yt-dlp Download videos from YouTube, no subscription The tool itself is public domain (Unlicense). YouTube's own terms say you may not "access, reproduce, download" content except as the service authorizes or with permission, so on YouTube it is your account at risk, not the tool's license.
Fooocus Your own Midjourney Its README puts the project in "limited long-term support (LTS) with bug fixes only", built on Stable Diffusion XL. For newer models such as Flux, the author points to WebUI Forge or ComfyUI. Last release: v2.5.5, August 12, 2024.
n8n Self-host your automations n8n's Sustainable Use License lets you use or modify it "only for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use". Fine for your own workflows; selling it as a service needs a deal with n8n.
Cal.com Open-source Calendly The repository now redirects to Cal.diy, "the open source community edition of Cal.com", which its README "strictly" recommends for "personal, non-production use". Commercial use goes to hosted Cal.com.
Bitwarden Free password manager The server is AGPL-3.0 except the /bitwarden_license folder, which is under the Bitwarden License.
Plausible, AppFlowy Self-host it Both AGPL-3.0: free to run for yourself, but if you change the code and offer it to others over the web, you must publish your changes.

The AI part, with AgentGid's data

Four of the ten are AI tools, and three of them are in AgentGid's catalogs:

  • Ollama (183,608 GitHub stars) runs open models on your own machine for free. It is not only local any more: the same app offers cloud models, free with starter credits, and Pro at $20 a month. Its client libraries are on our tool pages for Python and JavaScript, and its API on our APIs page.
  • Whisper (110,753 stars, MIT) is on /tools/. Its last release is from June 2025; AgentGid's transcription kit starts with Faster Whisper and keeps the model on your machine.
  • n8n is #4 of all agents AgentGid tracks by Gid Score and #1 among agent builders and workflow automation, with 207,738 GitHub stars. Gid Score measures adoption and attention, not quality.
  • Fooocus (53,568 stars) is not in our catalog, and its own README now points to newer tools; our AI image generators page lists the maintained options with their licenses.

The verdict

  • The list is a good starting point, and the "won't replace every paid service for every user" line at the end of the post is the most accurate sentence in it.
  • "Open source" and "free for your business" are different things. n8n and Cal.diy are free for your own use, with limits on running them as a business; AGPL projects are free to run but ask you to share changes you serve to others.
  • For AI, pick maintained projects. Ollama and Whisper are safe bets for local models and transcription; for local image generation, Fooocus's own author recommends newer tools.
