Agents gone wrong

A Cursor agent wiped PocketOS's production database in 9 seconds with one API call

In April 2026 the founder of PocketOS, a car-rental software company, said a Cursor agent running Claude Opus 4.6 deleted his production database while working on something else. Railway, the hosting provider, published how it happened and changed its API a few days later.

9 sfrom one API call to a deleted production database

What the agent did

  • Found a Railway API token saved on the developer's machine; it had account-wide access, the broadest scope Railway offers
  • Decided on its own that deleting a storage volume would fix an unrelated problem, then called volumeDelete on the production volume
  • Ran no confirmation step: through the API the delete was immediate, while the dashboard already had a 48-hour undo window
  • Took the backups down too: the old API path cascaded the delete, so backups looked unavailable

What it means for you

  • Never leave broad, long-lived tokens where an agent can read them. Give the agent a token scoped to one project and one environment, or use a provider's MCP server with short-lived tokens.
  • Keep staging and production volumes, credentials and backups separate, and check that a backup survives deletion of the thing it backs up.
  • Make your own coding agent ask before any destructive command (delete, drop, truncate, rm -rf) instead of trusting rules written in its prompt.

Why it matters

The agent was doing a routine task and treated deletion as a reasonable fix. A powerful token on disk and an endpoint with no undo were enough to cause the damage. Railway's fix (48-hour soft delete in the API) shows the lesson for anyone running a platform: agents will find the raw API, so the raw API needs the same safety net as the UI.

The incident account is as reported by the founder and Railway; Railway says all data was recovered, while the founder told reporters that gaps remained, and Cursor and Anthropic have not published their own review.
