Agents in action

950 Claude agents searched DNA for 21 hours and flagged a new kind of enzyme system

Anthropic says its part was limited to the initial prompt and the lab work. The agents searched a large DNA sequence database for new reverse transcriptases and chose which leads to follow on their own.

What the agent did

  • Ran about 950 agents for 21 hours, using 210 million tokens
  • Collected 200,000+ reverse transcriptases and picked out 3,500 new candidate systems
  • Narrowed them to the 20 most compelling and wrote a report on each
  • Spotted a repeat pattern next to an unusual enzyme, counted and measured the repeats and checked the literature before reporting it
Funnel on a log scale: 200,000+ reverse transcriptases, 3,500 candidate systems, 20 reported, 1 new kind of system; about 950 agents, 21 hours, 210 million tokens.

Why it matters

The agents did the screening, from hundreds of thousands of sequences down to 20 worth a scientist's time. People kept the lab: first experiments show the array is expressed as distinct short RNAs.

Early results from a pre-print by Anthropic's own scientists. In their words, "we don't yet know its function."
