n8n vs Zapier Agents vs Dify: AI Workflow Automation Tools Compared (2026)
Workflow automation with AI agents: n8n, Zapier Agents, Dify, Microsoft Copilot Studio and open-source builders compared on hosting, pricing, integrations and who each one suits.
Workflow automation used to mean fixed recipes: when a form is submitted, add a row and send an email. AI agents add steps that read, decide and write, such as classifying a support email, drafting a reply or researching a lead, inside the same workflows. The tools below all do this, from different starting points.
At a glance
| Tool | Self-hosting | Licence | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|
| n8n | Yes | Sustainable Use License (source-available) | Free |
| Zapier Agents | No | Proprietary | Free + $33.33/mo |
| Dify | Yes | Apache-2.0 with additional conditions | Free |
| Microsoft Copilot Studio | No | Proprietary | Usage-based |
| Activepieces | Yes | MIT (community edition) | Free |
| Flowise | Yes | Apache-2.0 (enterprise features under a separate licence) | Free |
| Langflow | Yes | MIT | Free (OSS) |
"Self-hosting" means you can run it on your own server. n8n's community edition is source-available under its Sustainable Use License rather than an OSI open-source licence, which matters if you plan to resell it.
n8n: technical teams that want control
n8n is a visual workflow editor with several hundred integrations and native AI agent nodes. You can self-host it for free, which is why it is popular with technical teams and agencies that handle sensitive data or high volumes: on your own server you pay for infrastructure and model calls, not per task. It expects some comfort with APIs and JSON. Published examples, such as an n8n pipeline that builds sales proposals in under a minute, are collected in the use cases.
Zapier Agents: the widest app coverage, no setup
Zapier Agents builds AI agents that act across Zapier's 9,000+ connected apps, run on triggers or schedules and can browse the web. It is the easiest start for non-technical teams and for apps nobody else integrates with. It is cloud-only and priced by agent activity on top of Zapier, so costs grow with volume.
Dify, Flowise and Langflow: building AI apps visually
Dify, Flowise and Langflow start from the AI side: retrieval over your documents, chat assistants and agent workflows, built on a canvas and exposed as an API. They are closer to an application platform than to a classic automation tool. All three can be self-hosted. Activepieces sits between the two worlds: an open-source, n8n-style automation tool with AI agent steps and MCP support.
Copilot Studio: if you live in Microsoft 365
Microsoft Copilot Studio builds agents and flows that publish to Teams, Microsoft 365 Copilot and websites, with Microsoft's governance controls. It is the natural choice inside a Microsoft organisation and an awkward one outside it.
"AI employees"
Lindy and Relevance AI sell agents as teammates that handle inboxes, meetings or sales tasks, configured in plain language rather than as diagrams. Faster to set up, less transparent about what happens inside.
How to choose
- Who builds it? Developers or technical ops: n8n or Dify. Business users: Zapier Agents or an AI-employee product.
- Where must the data stay? If it cannot leave your infrastructure, choose a self-hostable tool.
- How many runs a month? At high volume, per-task or per-activity pricing adds up; self-hosting turns it into a fixed server cost plus model calls.
- Are your apps covered? Check the two or three systems that matter most before anything else.
- Keep a human step for anything that sends messages to customers or moves money, at least at first.
