Best AI Code Review Tools in 2026: CodeRabbit, Greptile, Graphite, Copilot and Open Source
AI code review agents for pull requests compared: what they check, how they are priced, open-source options and how to roll one out without drowning your team in comments.
AI code review tools read every pull request, post comments on likely bugs, security problems and style issues, and often summarise the change for the human reviewer. They do not replace review; done well, they let reviewers spend their attention on design instead of typos and missed null checks.

What sets them apart
- Codebase context. The useful comments come from knowing the rest of the repository: that a function is called elsewhere, that a pattern violates a convention. Greptile builds a graph index of the whole codebase for this; Qodo and Bito also review with repository-wide context.
- Where review happens. Most post on GitHub or GitLab pull requests; CodeRabbit, Sourcery and others also review in the IDE or from the command line before you push.
- Workflow. Graphite is a review platform built around stacked pull requests with an AI reviewer inside; Cursor agreed to acquire it in late 2025.
- Self-hosting. PR-Agent is open source and runs as a GitHub Action, CLI or Docker container with your own model key, which keeps code on your infrastructure. Bito offers a self-hosted agent too.

How to roll one out
- Start on one active repository for two weeks, not the whole organisation.
- Tune the noise. Most tools let you set rules and ignore paths. If developers start resolving comments without reading them, the tool is too chatty.
- Measure something. Bugs caught before merge, review turnaround time or the share of AI comments that lead to a change. Without a number, the decision becomes a matter of taste.
- Keep humans accountable. An approval should still come from a person who understands the change.
- Check data terms for private code: retention, training use and where the model runs.
