# NOAA NCEI Climate Data Online and Access Data Service

NOAA's archive of historical weather and climate observations, including daily station records (GHCN-Daily) from over 90,000 land stations, with a key-less data service API, a token-based CDO API and bulk file downloads.

## API

- Official API: yes, docs https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/support/access-data-service-api-user-documentation
- Key needed: no
- Price: Free; limits: Access Data Service: no key needed (tested). Older CDO Web Services v2 (https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/cdo-web/api/v2/) needs a free token, limited to five requests per second and 10,000 requests per day
- Base URL: https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/services/data/v1
- Formats: csv, json, ssv, pdf, netcdf

Example request:

```
https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/services/data/v1?dataset=daily-summaries&stations=USW00094728&startDate=2024-01-01&endDate=2024-01-07&dataTypes=TMAX,TMIN,PRCP&format=json
## Rules for an agent
- Prefer the key-less Access Data Service (/access/services/data/v1?dataset=daily-summaries&stations=...&format=json); use GHCN station IDs like USW00094728 (New York Central Park); the token-based cdo-web/api/v2 is only needed for its search endpoints.
- Cite NOAA NCEI and the dataset (e.g. GHCN-Daily, Menne et al. 2012) where the data is used.
- For commercial products, stick to US station data or check the WMO Resolution 40 note: non-US GHCN data may not be re-exported for commercial services.
- The cdo-web/api/v2 token is limited to 5 requests/second and 10,000/day; keep Access Data Service requests to reasonable date ranges.
