# Paper search for your research agent

Give your agent a tool that finds papers, their citations and authors through the Semantic Scholar API, and links the arXiv preprint when there is one.

## Parts

- Data: [Semantic Scholar](https://agentgid.com/resources/semantic-scholar/agent.md): A free search engine for scientific papers from Ai2, with a public Academic Graph API and bulk dataset releases of papers, authors, citations and abstracts.
- Data: [arXiv](https://agentgid.com/resources/arxiv/agent.md): The open preprint server for physics, maths, computer science and other fields, with a free keyless query API, OAI-PMH metadata harvesting and full-text PDFs and sources in bulk on Amazon S3.
- Product recipe: [Research agent](https://agentgid.com/build/recipes/research-agent/agent.md)
- HTTP client: [HTTPX](https://agentgid.com/tools/httpx/agent.md)

## Steps

1. Call the Academic Graph paper search with only the fields you need (title, year, citation count, external ids).
2. Follow citations and references for the papers the user picks.
3. When a paper has an arXiv id, link its arXiv abstract page.

## Watch out

- Without a key all callers share one rate pool, so retry with backoff; a free key gives a steady rate.
- Credit Semantic Scholar; keep to one request every three seconds on arXiv.
